The EUROPEAN STANDARD EN 50600

The Series of Standards EN 50600 “Information technology - data centre facilities and infrastructures” is to compensate the lack of a Standard for data centre facilities and infrastructures within Europe. In this Series of Standards, such fundamental topics as building construction, power distribution, air conditioning, security systems or the fields of management and operation will be covered comprehensively in future. The following Figure shows the schematic connection between the individual Standards of the Series of Standards EN 50600 (source: ÖVE/ÖNORM EN 50600-1):

The breakdown of the individual Standards already reflects that an analogy to the structures of ANSI/TIA-942-A-2012 is striven for. A look at the first version of EN 50600-1 “General concepts”, which has already been published, confirms this structural alignment, a four-level rating system also being used for the availability of data centre facilities and infrastructures. For purposes of use - e.g. for enabling rating at audits - this Part 1 (EN 50600-1 Information technology - Data centre facilities and infrastructures - Part 1: General concepts) will always have to be combined with the respectively relevant Basic Technical Standard of the Series of Standards (EN 50600-2-x). At the moment, these Basic Technical Standards are in the draft status. This means that EN 50600 could not yet be used for audits.

Timetable for the publication of the new EN 50600
EN 50600 is a comprehensive Series of Standards and is to be published step by step. “EN 50600-1 Information technology - Data centre facilities and infrastructures - Part 1: General concepts” has been completed and was published in June 2013. As for the Standards EN 50600-2-1 “Building construction” and EN 50600-2-2 “Power distribution”, first drafts can be obtained. The availability of all parts of the Series of Standards is promised for late 2014.

Summary
EN 50600 is in a speedy development process and will become the new European Standard for data centre facilities and infrastructures. Any companies that need external quality evidence for their data centre facilities and infrastructures (“data center locations” acc. to ANSI/TIA 942) even now can avail of certification acc. to ANSI/TIA-942, which is provided by the Certification Body CIS. In this respect, the American “special features” are interpreted correspondingly. As soon as EN 50600 is fully available, existing Certificates for data centre facilities and infrastructures, which have already been issued by CIS in the course of Surveillance and Recertification Audits, will be updated acc. to EN 50600.
