Current status of the EN 50600 standard development

Update for data centres 2024

In autumn 2023, with the publication of EN 50600-2-4:2023, the entire issue 2 of the part for the design of basic data centre (DC) infrastructures was completed. This edition has been published and is available at the official standards reference centre.

In the meantime, the responsible European technical committee of CENELEC is already working on issue 3 of the relevant parts of the standard with the general concepts, energy supply and energy distribution and the control of environmental conditions/air conditioning. The parts of the standard from the “Design” section currently form the framework for the certification of data centre basic infrastructure services. CIS has also been the first Austrian testing company to be accredited since 2023.

From today’s perspective, it is still unclear when version 2 of the standard with more mature requirements for the operation of data centre basic infrastructures (EN 50600-3-1) will be published.

The updated edition of CLC/TS 50600-5-1:2023 was published in autumn 2023, describing a maturity model for energy management and environmental sustainability for data centres in order to contribute to the implementation of the European Green Deal.

Accreditation of the certification service according to "EN 50600 – Design"

For CIS customers, this means that certifications already carried out by CIS in accordance with the “EN 50600 – Design” model will receive a certificate with a reference to the relevant accreditation at the next successful recertification.

Requirements for data centre locations in relation to NISG

For some time now, the NIS Fact Sheet on security measures for operators of essential services published by the Federal Chancellery has referred to EN 50600 as a reference standard. If IT facilities are operated in the computer room area of a data centre site (primary assets), which in turn provide services for essential and/or important facilities, the responsible data centre operators with their basic data centre infrastructure services (secondary assets) are also in the NIS focus to a certain extent.
