Data Centers
If you want to back up data, don't forget the basics: the data center.
Data centres – the backbone of the digital world. A data centre is the digital heart of every company. This is where data is stored, processed and protected – around the clock. Whether customer data, business processes or online services: our world is based on functioning and stable data centres.
In order for companies to work securely, reliably and efficiently, they need the highest standards of availability, security and technology. This is exactly where certifications for data centres come in: They guarantee tested quality and reliability, protect sensitive information and create trust – both for your own company and for customers and partners.

It is a top priority for data centre owners and operators to gain the trust of their customers, who expect a high-quality, secure and environmentally friendly basic data centre infrastructure service for the ICT systems (information and communication technologies) housed in the computer room area.
This expectation of high-quality basic data centre infrastructure services applies both to internal ICT customers within the organisation and to external customers of data centre service providers. The following is required for ICT systems
- a stable and continuous supply of electrical energy,
- reliable control of the ambient conditions (air conditioning),
- a scalable, high-performance infrastructure for telecommunications cabling and
- an appropriate level of physical and environmental security
- energy-efficient operation and protection of the environment
In Europe, and particularly in German-speaking countries, there is a growing demand for data centres to be certified in accordance with recognised technical standards, i.e. in the form of an internationally recognised standard. Both the trend towards IT outsourcing and cloud computing make it necessary for the quality, performance and security of a data centre to be certified by an independent testing body.
Active participation in the European standardisation committee
CIS is actively involved in the European standardisation committee of CENELEC TC 215/WG 3 Facilities and Infrastructures, which is responsible for the further development of EN 50600. At national level, CIS is also represented on the relevant Austrian standardisation committee of the OVE (Austrian Electrotechnical Association).
This keeps us up-to-date and at the cutting edge of developments – and we pass this expertise on to our customers.
Ecolabel UZ 80 Data centres
The Austrian Ecolabel is awarded for four years by the Republic of Austria, represented by the Federal Minister for Climate Protection, following a thorough examination of the fulfilment of the criteria. Those interested in applying can obtain application documents from the Association for Consumer Information.</strong
An overall report from a qualified independent auditing organisation must be submitted as proof of implementation of the above criteria. CIS auditors are listed on the Austrian Ecolabel website as an approved testing body for “Data centres UZ 80”.
EN 50600
The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC) published the EN 50600 series, the first Europe-wide, transnational standard for data centres (DCs) with a holistic approach. With this holistic approach, EN 50600 not only offers technical specifications, but also structured methods for assessing risks, availability, energy efficiency and operating processes. This makes the quality of a data centre transparent and certifiable – a growing competitive advantage for operators and an important criterion for customers in times of cloud computing and IT outsourcing.
CIS is a member of the Austrian Data Centre Association
The Austrian Data Center Association (ADCA) is a non-profit association that represents the interests of Austrian data centre operators. The association was founded in 2023 and is open to all stakeholders involved in data centre infrastructure and data centre operations. Among other things, it is committed to the topics of sustainability and security.
“As the first accredited testing centre for EN 50600 certifications, we are pleased to be able to make a valuable contribution to ADCA with our expertise and thus strengthen Austria as a data centre location. At the same time, membership also offers CIS the opportunity to keep its finger on the pulse of the latest information from the data centre industry in Austria in order to ensure the practical suitability of the generic EN 50600 audit models for CIS customers,” says Peter Wörgötter, CIS expert for EN 50600.
