How AI is changing the IT job market in Austria

The discussion surrounding the use of AI has already permeated all areas of our lives and work. In the latter, we are increasingly asking ourselves: What will our jobs look like in the future and how will jobs in areas such as IT, cybersecurity, data protection, business continuity, etc. develop? We have summarised the current trends and forecasts for you!

According to a study by the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium (Cisco, SAP, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and other partners), 92% of IT jobs will be changed by AI. This applies above all to entry-level and mid-level positions. In all IT jobs, knowledge of AI ethics and general AI knowledge will become more important in the future.

New job profiles such as AI trainer or prompt engineer will emerge, while other activities could be replaced by automation. At the same time, AI offers the opportunity to alleviate the shortage of skilled labour by taking over routine tasks and thus creating capacity for more complex tasks.

In the age of artificial intelligence, new, highly relevant professional fields are emerging in the IT sector – especially in four areas that are crucial for the future of Austrian companies:

  • Cybersecurity & information security:

With the increasing use of AI in defence, classic security jobs are being redefined. Tools such as security copilots or large-language models help to detect threats more quickly and respond in a targeted manner – for example in the case of deepfake phishing or automated attacks. Skills in MLOps, SOC automation and AI-based analysis are in demand. According to studies, 55% of companies already rely on generative AI for IT defence – and the trend is rising.

  • Data protection & AI compliance:

The new EU AI Regulation has brought clear rules since February 2025: Emotion recognition in the workplace is prohibited and companies must prove that employees have AI skills. New roles such as “AI Compliance Officer” or “Privacy-by-Design Engineer” are emerging. According to PwC, those who combine privacy and AI compliance can reduce the legal risk by up to 18% – a real competitive advantage.

  • Business continuity & resilience:

Business crisis preparedness is also becoming more intelligent. AI models simulate risks in real time, IoT systems provide warning signals. New metrics such as “time-to-AI failover” are replacing conventional recovery times. We are looking for specialists who combine cloud expertise with risk management and ethical AI use – often with salary bonuses of up to 12%.

  • AI governance & ethics:

As many companies are not yet prepared for AI-based threats, overarching roles such as “Chief AI Security Architect” or “Explainability Specialist” are emerging. From 2027, the new EU regulation will require all high-risk AI systems to have clear audit trails – which will also open up numerous new opportunities in the labour market.

Conclusion: Current developments mean that we are increasingly moving away from rigid IT roles towards dynamic profiles with an understanding of technology, ethics and law. Those who continue their education now, especially in the field of AI, are actively shaping the digital future and securing a workplace that enables creativity, efficiency and security.
